For the silverbugs - Silver dollar pic

The copperhead post was successful in getting more pics, so I thought I would post a pic of a Peace Dollar MS63, my grade. Feel free to post your silver dollar pics or any other US silver coin, too.

Sorry for the large pic, but I love how the detail of her hair pops.

A strong strike, Ag, and a fine example of the Peace dollar. I don't remember seeing any nicer, at least for a long time.
I can remember quite distinctly when people use to spend these and Morgans occasionally in everyday commerce. I know I did many years ago when short the cash to buy some cigarettes. A fool thing to do ( cigarettes AND spending silver dollars) but there was little premium for them back then in the mid 1960's.

Thanks Fritzberg, but there are too many bag marks for it to grade higher. The way I took this pic, those marks do not show well, but they are there.

Occaisonally, I will see the pre 64 half dollar, but not silver dollars anymore. Besides in the 60's those coins were still spendable and not worth much more than their face. I keep back nickels as they are worth 6.7 cents currently. Most don't care, but soon enough nickel will be very worthwhile.

Check out the near proof like condition of that coin! The smokey haze of the fields makes the design pop almost like it was a proof coin.

Thanks for sharing.

The previous post that Morgan has an old green label. Have you thought about getting that resubmitted? IT might score 65.

There is nothing really special about this Walker except for the
strange intense copper toning. It's straight out of a 90% bag.
I've never seen anything quite like it, so I thought I'd post it.

The 1921 Morgan isn't certified. It is the best looking one out of a roll of BU '21 Morgans that I bought a few years ago. I bought that roll at a great price cause it was before the price of silver ran up.

I may send it in to PCGS some day.

Here's an 1889 CC cartwheel I'm very fond of.
The family story is my Granny carried it back east
from Wyoming on a prairie schooner. She was
also born in 1889. She may have also been the
one who cleaned it, dad blangit.
Of course it could just be a story made up by her.

You can tell when you've got the numismatic bug - when you sit around and look at coin pics! (Or watch HSN, knowning you'd NEVER buy at those prices but just watch to see coins and hear stories about them. :haha: )

This has been a great thread to read and drool over - as The Great Ag said - good thing some of these are encapsulated or we'd be doing damage.

And some absolutely stunning coins here.

Real Jack - With the coins I have, I often wonder about their individual history - who might have held them, stuff like that. I don't have a single coin from anyone in my family cause none of them were ever into coins. How cool that you have one that was carried by a family member like that. Very nice.

I have a few that are encapsulated but not photographed - I have never tried to take pics of mine, not sure I have a camera that would do the job as well as these or I'd post a Top 100 Vam-8 I have in MS 65..........

But here's another toned one I like, an 1984-PL MS 64...........>

Hey, Master Ho, beautiful coin pic, and Real Jack and RossL good pics. You can never have enough morgans, especially Carson City morgans. I have an 1883 in MS63-64. Love those Morgans.

RossL wins for the most beautiful coins. Yes Master Ho, I'm addicted. I am currently taking several pics of various coins to post, but I saw RossL's proof madison and could not resist adding this a 1917 Type 1 Standling Liberty quarter. Full breast exposed including nipple. I don't have this coin, yet, but I am saving up. The era from 1916 to 1932 produced the most beautiful US coins. This coin was only minted for half a year. The public threw a fit!

As promised here is my 1802 silver Reales. It has been circulated, but this coin was the standard for American silver dollars. Jefferson was given the task of assaying coins from around the world to report back to congress his findings, and the Spanish Reale, silver mined in Mexico was the coin our Congress settled on. As a matter of fact, the Reales was coin in America until 1857 when our gov't decided they had enough US coin in circulation, and made all US coins legal tender.

It's late and I can't get the lighting right so I apologize for the quality of the pics, and the reverse is upside down.

That's why I said ... best cleavage ever on a US silver dollar. In 1917, the public was outraged by some cleavage. In 1999, nobody even noticed.

I have one of those type 1's around here somewhere. We may have to start a thread for silver quarters.

Yeah, I know, but when you started taking about cleavage, I thought boobs, and this is a amazing coin whether she's bare or wearing her armor.

Part of no one noticing Ms. Madison's cleavage was that it was part of a commemorative. I have a few, but darn few as I am skeptical they will maintain there value.

Go for it and start a quarter thread. My camera is not taking the best pics now. Can't get the lighting right, so my quarters will have to stay away until I can snap them in proper daylight.

RossL has some great looking stuff - I have a couple I'd love to show but no pictures, especially a 1880/79-CC Reverse 1878 MS 64, Overdate - "Toned" - but his is still more gorgeous!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I tend towards dollars, not quarters, so that 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty quarter was something new for me - but man, I don't know if its the coin or your photography - but now you've got me wanting one of those too (and not for the exposed breast - that' just a running joke). Love the toning on that coin too!

Are you guys sure on the mintage? My coin books show that these coins have the following mintages:

Proof = 224,495
Unc - 89,203

Could it be possible that the 23,000 mintage is for the two coin set?

Nice coin. I have a couple of those Spanish 8 Reales coins in my collection but they have Asian chop Marks on them. Your coin is much nicer than mine because it is hard to find them without the chopmarks as so many of these coins spent time circulating in the orient.

Look at Bill's coin, post #12, minted in 1829. I really don't know much about numi but could that be real? It looks like it was minted yesterday and put in a time capsule. Are there really coins that old and that perfect out there? What would that be worth?

Hard to tell from the pic, bit it looks real. judging from the uniform color and complete absense of toning, it may have been lightly dipped. I think most collectors of old halves would rather have some toning.

Heh, one of the very few numismatic questions I can answer. That's not really an errant ray - it's a die clash, so you're actually seeing detail from the other side of the coin.
